Tapas bars in the Gothic Quarter
The Gothic Quarter is the historic heart of Barcelona, built on the foundations of the ancient
Roman city of Barcino. Among its medieval alleyways, hidden squares and millennial churches you’ll find some of the oldest and most characterful bars in the city — establishments that have been serving tapas to barceloneses for more than a century without needing to change anything to remain the best. Eating tapas in the Gothic Quarter is much more than eating — it’s a historical experience. Every bar has a story to tell and every tapa tastes better knowing which century they started making it.
The 5 tapas bars of the Gothic Quarter
La Plata
Located next to the Basilica of the Virgin of La Mercè, patron saint of Barcelona, La Plata is the bar with the most charisma in the Gothic Quarter. The tapas are simple but delicious — no frills, no long menu, no pretensions — and the fried small fish is the undisputed star dish. A bar that appears not to have changed in decades and doesn’t need to change anything.
Our tip: The fried small fish is sacred here. Order it with a cold glass of white wine and sit at the bar.
Mesón del Café 1909
A charming spot in the heart of the Gothic Quarter where you’ll find one of the best Catalan creams in Barcelona alongside a selection of traditional tapas. The bar preserves the entire atmosphere of the early 20th century and the coffee they’ve been serving since 1909 remains exceptional.
Our tip: End your visit with a crema catalana — it's the house speciality and one of the best desserts you can try in the Gothic Quarter.
Bodega la Palma
Maintaining its essence since 1935 with absolute fidelity to tradition. Vermouth, wines and quality tapas — the holy trinity of this wine cellar that has been the Gothic Quarter residents’ meeting point for nearly ninety years. A bar that transmits a calm and authenticity hard to find in the centre of Barcelona.
Our tip: Plaça de Sant Just, just a few steps away, is one of the most peaceful and beautiful squares in the Gothic Quarter. Combine the visit.
Bodega Vasconia
Since 1905 they’ve been serving home-cooked dishes made with care and good ingredients. It’s one of the oldest bars in the Gothic Quarter and one that has best preserved the spirit of the old Barcelona wine cellars. Their homemade vermouth is one of the best in the city.
Our tip: Order the homemade vermouth with olives — it's the perfect aperitif before exploring the alleyways of the Gothic Quarter.
Xarcutería la Pineda
The oldest tasting charcuterie in Barcelona. Since 1930 it has continued to be a reference point for the city’s gastronomy, with a selection of cold meats, cheeses and preserves of the highest quality. A unique place of its kind that combines the shop and the tasting in the same space.
Our tip: It's just a few steps from Santa Maria del Pi church, one of the jewels of Catalan Gothic architecture. Visit the church and then stop by La Pineda.

The Gothic Quarter: two thousand years of history between alleyway and alleyway
Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter is one of the best preserved historic centres in Europe. On the foundations of the Roman Barcino was built medieval Barcelona, whose alleyways, squares and buildings still define the neighbourhood’s character today. Barcelona Cathedral, the Pont del Bisbe, Plaça de Sant Jaume and the remains of the Roman temple of Augustus are just some of the treasures hidden among its streets. A neighbourhood to explore on foot, without hurrying, getting deliberately lost.
