Tapas bars in Barceloneta

Barceloneta is Barcelona’s quintessential maritime neighbourhood. Its narrow streets, smell of
the sea and bars with over a hundred years of history make it one of the best places in the city to
have tapas like a true barcelonés. Here gastronomy smells of salt and tradition: homemade
vermouth, the legendary bomba, Cantabrian anchovies and fish straight from the sea.
These are the six most authentic tapas bars in Barceloneta, far from tourist traps, where the
neighbourhood regulars still eat exactly as they have for the past fifty years.

La Cova Fumada — where the Barceloneta bomba was born

If there is one tapas bar that defines Barceloneta’s gastronomy, it’s La Cova Fumada. This bar
with no menu and no visible sign is where the legendary Barceloneta bomba was born: a ball of
mashed potato filled with minced meat, breaded and fried, invented by Doña Maria Pla, the
current owner’s grandmother. No publicity, no online bookings — just a counter with fresh daily
produce and a Barcelona gastronomic legend you simply have to try.

Our tip: Arrive before one o'clock in the afternoon or you'll miss out on the bomba.

La Bombeta — tapas without frills in the heart of the maritime neighbourhood

One of La Bombeta’s walls says it all: «We don’t speak English but we make bloody great
bombas». And they’re right. This legendary tapas bar in the maritime neighbourhood has spent
decades as the Barceloneta locals’ favourite, with a menu of traditional tapas that lives up to its
famous bombas: croquettes, patatas bravas, squid… all without artifice and with quality produce.

Our tip: The bombas and the bravas are the perfect duo here. Order a portion of each and eat at the bar — that's how the locals do it.

Bodega la Peninsular — the Spanish soul of Barceloneta

With its bull’s head and Spanish flag on the wall, Bodega la Peninsular is the most characterful
tapas bar in the neighbourhood. Its menu is a direct tribute to the cooking of the neighbourhood’s
grandmothers and the flavours of the sea: generous sandwiches, classic tapas and an
atmosphere that takes you back to the Barcelona of fifty years ago. Far from the tourist
shopfront, this is where the neighbourhood people eat.

Our tip: Arrive at vermouth time, before one in the afternoon. That's when the bar is most alive and the kitchen is at its best.

Electricitat — 1908: the bar that hasn't changed in over a hundred years

Founded in 1908, Electricitat is one of the oldest bars in Barcelona and a genuine time machine.
Over a hundred years of history and barely anything has changed: the same counter, the same
atmosphere, the same classic tapas. Try their homemade vermouth — one of the best in
Barceloneta — along with the traditional tapas: the bomba, the Russian salad and the croquettes
are unmissable.

Our tip: Always start with the house vermouth before ordering tapas — that's the right way to enter this bar, which has been doing it the same way since 1908.

Vaso de Oro — the best-poured beer in Barceloneta

At Vaso de Oro the ritual begins at the bar: a uniformed waiter will pour your beer with a
precision and care that is rarely seen in Barcelona anymore. A pure spectacle. To accompany it,
traditional quality tapas, with the foie fillet as the house star dish. A neighbourhood classic that
remains true to itself.

Our tip: The bar is long and there's always room if you arrive outside peak hours. Order the foie fillet and a perfectly poured beer — it's the house combo.

Jai-Ca — since 1955 with parrot Baldomero as witness

A Barceloneta classic since 1955 with a story as peculiar as its tapas. The bar’s logo is a parrot,
and not by chance: for decades Baldomero lived here, a parrot with a broken wing that arrived on
a merchant ship and was taken in by the bar’s owner until his death in 2010. The tapas live up to
the legend: croquettes and fried anchovies that have no rival in the neighbourhood.

Our tip: The croquettes go fast — if you see them on the daily board, order without hesitating. The fried anchovies are just as good and almost nobody orders them.

Barceloneta: the neighbourhood of tapas and the sea

Barceloneta was born in the 18th century as a  neighbourhood of fishermen and sailors, and that
identity is still alive today in its bars and restaurants. It’s the only neighbourhood in Barcelona
where you can eat a freshly made bomba, have a century-old vermouth and walk to the beach in
five minutes. A neighbourhood that barceloneses have known all their lives and that still retains
the authenticity that is increasingly hard to find in the city centre
